José Luis Madueño - Chilcano
Afro-Peruvian Jazz
|
|
Chilcano
is the name of José Luis Madueño
first solo album, in which he appears
as performer of his own compositions.
It was produced in Florida, (January,
1996), and edited by Songosaurus,
an American label dedicated to latin
jazz. The CD is being distributed
in the USA and Europe since 1997.
This Album has been released for the
first time in Perú on June
26th, 1999 in a concert produced by
RESONANCIAS Productions at the Peruvian-Japanese
Theater with special guest musicians:
Alex Acuña (drums) and Oscar
Stagnaro (electric bass). |
|
José
Luis Madueño's compositions in this
Album include Afro Peruvian rhythms as Landó,
Festejo, Zamacueca, Valse
and some other Latin-American styles as
Bossanova, Baiao, Venezuelan
Joropo and Cuban Son. The
talented musicians that performed in Chilcano
are world class players, well known, specially
in the jazz spheres. |
They
come from different countries and
live in the USA: Alex Acuña
(drums & percussion, Perú),
John Patitucci (acoustic bass, USA),
Steve Tavaglione (saxophone, USA),
Ramón Satagnaro (guitar, Perú),
Oscar Stagnaro (electric bass, Perú),
Richie Zellon (guitar, Perú),
Pedro Eustache (flute, Venezuela),
John Peña (electric bass, Puerto
Rico) and Barry Smith (drums, USA).
José Luis appears on the acoustic
piano, synthesizers, cajón
peruano and voice. The variety and
interaction of different musical and
cultural worlds contributes on giving
a particular sound to this album. |

Chilcano
has been considered by the American
jazz critic as a project that expands
the boundaries of Latin jazz
with seldom rhythms as Landó
and Festejo that are unknown by listeners
of Latin jazz. For most people latin
rhythms are those from Cuba, Puerto
Rico and Brazil. South America
has a wide variety of music that is
just beginning to evolve and expand
in areas as jazz, rock, pop and symphonic
music. With productions like this,
Perú appears in the Latin Jazz
spheres bringing to the world this
unique style, of exciting rhythms
and melodies. |
|
This recording
has been well received by different specialized
magazines in the USA, as Latin Beat,
Jazz Times, Jam Magazine and
Jazziz. |
|
|
|
|
|
With this
album, José Luis Madueño makes
his debut in the industry of latin jazz
in the USA as well as in Peru. The Distribution
of Chilcano in Peru is made through RESONANCIAS,
Madueño's own label. |
