III SGAE Latin Jazz Contest
For the second time, José Luis Madueno
is positioned as a finalist on the SGAE Latin jazz contest
organized by SGAE (the spanish Authors and Publishers Society)
and Fundacion Autor. The last phase of this contest took
place in Cuba as part of the La Habana Jazz Festival on December
2002. This contest is performed each two years and its main purpose
is to diffuse latin jazz music.
The jury was composed by talented and well known
musicians: the cuban piano performers Chucho Valdes and Gonzalo
Rubalcaba, the spanish saxophone and flute performer Jorge
Pardo, the puertorican percussionist Bobby Sanabria and
the american flute performer Dave Valentin.
This III version of the contest had eight finalist
composers: two cubans, two spanish, two brazilians, a colombian
and a peruvian. The compositions were performed on an open concert
by the cuban band Irakere and Jose Luis obtained the second
prize, for the second consecutive time, with his afroperuvian
composition titled "En el rincon".
Jose Luis put his faith in sending a composition
based on an afroperuvian rhythm: the festejo. This kind of
music has a unique feel; the cajon peruano is the instrument
that plays the main role. Afroperuvian music is starting to cross
frontiers and constitutes a fresh sound for all audiences, very
used to afro caribbean music.
